Guide To .ie Domain Registration Options

The information provided here is intended to assist clients in their application for an IE domain. It does not provide any guarantee that your application will be accepted.

The IEDR is the ultimate authority so if you are unsure please contact them directly.

Am I Eligible?

If you fall under one of these categories, then yes, however you will need to supply documentation in some cases. Please read on for further information.

  • You live in the Republic of Ireland
  • Applicants not situated in the 32 counties, must demonstrate a connection with Ireland (except those applying with a registered Community Trademark).

There are several categories of applicant. Each category has specific restrictions and requires certain proof that you are eligible.

What information do I need to supply?

We normally need your company or business number which is supplied by the Companies' Registration Office.

Choosing the correct category

To register a .IE domain name, you must first decide which category you are eligible under.

The table below lists the various categories and provides an outline of the documents / proof required in order to register a .ie domain.

Applicant Category Requirements & Options
Required: Company number. Verify your number at www.cro.ie
Options:
  • You can add words to their registered company name to form a domain name
  • You can register domains that have a reasonable connection with their business
  • You can register abbreviations of the company name
Example: Your company name was Joe Murphy Tyres Ltd, you could register any of the following domain names:
  • murphy.ie
  • murphytyres.ie
  • joemurphy.ie
  • joemurphytyres.ie
  • joemurphytyresltd.ie
Required: Business number. Verify your number at www.cro.ie
Options:
  • You can add words to the registered business name
  • You can register domains that have a reasonable connection with their business
  • You can register abbreviations of the registered business name.
Example: The above example (Corporate Name) holds for this category
Required: Trademark number
Options:
  • You can register domains that correspond closely with the TM
  • It may also include plurals, descriptors, or non-descriptive elements such as numbers or letters and may also differ in respect of signs, symbols or punctuation
Example: You hold the trademark for Acme, you could register any of the following domains:
  • acme.ie
  • acmeireland.ie
  • acme-ireland.ie
  • irishacme.ie
Required: No documentation required if we can verify the applicant as being a State Agency.
Options:
  • You can register any variation of the state agency name
Example: The following are real examples:
The National Arcives:
  • www.nationalarchives.ie
National Library of Ireland
  • www.nli.ie
Required: A faxed copy of the page from the publication where the applicant is stated as the writer or publisher of the publication.
Options:
  • You can register any reasonable variation of the publication name
Example: Your publication is Irish Domains, the following domains would be allowed:
  • www.irishdomains.ie
  • www.irishdomainsmag.ie
  • www.irish-domainsmag.ie
Required: No documentation required if the applicant is recognised by the Department of Education.
Options:
  • You can register any reasonable variation of the school or college name
Example: Your school or college name is St. Schools Secondary College, the following would be acceptable domain names:
  • www.stschools.ie
  • www.stschoolscollege.ie
  • www.sssc.ie
Required: A signed letter, on official letterhead, from the politician confirming their eligibility to register a domain name in this category.
Options:
  • You can register their personal name with or without their official title. (e.g.: seanmuldoon.ie or seanmuldoonmep.ie)
Example: The following are acceptable domain names for Joe Random, MEP:
  • www.joerandom.ie
  • www.joerandommep.ie
  • www.mepjoerandom.ie
Required: A self issued letter from the applicant on their letterhead stating that they "are an Unincorporated Association and require the domain name to reflect their organisation name".
Options:
  • You can register any reasonable variation of the club, society or partnership name
Example: The following are acceptable domain names for the club John's Snooker Club:
  • www.johnssnooker.ie
  • www.johnssnookerclub.ie
  • www.snookerclubjohn.ie
Required: A letter from the applicant's solicitor, accountant or bank manager confirming that the applicant trades under their own name
An artist or author who trades as themself would also fall under this category
Options:
  • You can register the applicants full personal name only
Example: John Ryan could only register the following domain name:
  • www.johnsryan.ie
Required: Copy of applicant's passport, birth certificate or utility bill.
Options:
  • firstname+surname.ie
  • Johnsmith.ie [first name / surname] Johnpaulsmith.ie [first name / middlename / surname] John-smith.ie [first name / hyphen / surname] John-paul-smith.ie [first name / hyphen / middlename / hyphen / surname] Johnpsmith.ie [first name / middle initial / surname] John-p-smith.ie [first name / hyphen / middle initial / hyphen / surname] Jsmith.ie [first initial / surname] Jpsmith.ie [first initial / middle initial / surname] Jp-smith.ie [first initial / middle initial / hyphen / surname] J-smith.ie [first initial / hyphen / surname] J-p-smith.ie [first initial / hyphen / middle initial / hyphen / surname] Paulsmith.ie [middlename / surname] Paul-smith.ie [middlename / hyphen / surname] Psmith.ie [middle initial / surname] P-smith.ie [middle initial / hyphen / surname]
  • intials+number.ie
Example: John Ryan could register the following domain names:
  • johnryan.ie
  • jryan.ie
  • j-ryan.ie
Required: Any evidence showing a connection between the applicant and the proposed domain name.
Options: Each application will be assessed on its own merit.
